WHAT IS THE BUBONIC PLAGUE?
The bubonic plague is caused by the bacteria Yersinia pestis. It is an infection of the lymph nodes, and is highly infectious. The plague is carried by fleas, and when fleas bite a person it infects them They can also get the disease by handling an infected animal, (mostly rats) but also rabbits, squirrels, even infected domestic cats and dogs. The disease was most commonly transmitted through direct human to human contact, such as a used tissue or the exposure to a cough or sneeze. The bubonic plague is fatal unless treated correctly and usually kills 50 to 90 percent of infected people within 4 days. The bubonic plague originated in Europe with the Black Plague, however it has spread worldwide. What made the plague fatal was it's symptoms.
Plague Symptoms:
-Acral Gangrene ( blackening of extremities )
-Chills
- malaise ( general ill feeling )
- High fever (102 Fahrenheit)
- Muscle cramps
- Seizures
- Painful lymph gland swelling in the armpit, neck, groin, or area where the patient became initially infected.
More extreme Cases:
- The skin color will change to a pink hue
- Heavy breathing
- Hermatemesis ( continuous vomiting of blood )
- Aching limbs
- Coughing
- General extreme pain
- Extreme fatigue
- Gastrointestinal issues
- lenticulae ( Black spots scattered throughout the body )
- Delirium
- Coma
